Our mission is to drive LGBTQIA+ representation and inclusion in UK advertising and marketing.
Outvertising is the LGBTQIA+ advocacy group for UK advertising and marketing.
We operate not-for-profit, and are completely volunteer-run by LGBTQIA+ people and allies from across all spectrums of the advertising and marketing industry.
Our mission is two-fold:
Firstly, we want to see the LGBTQIA+ community represented more frequently, more centrally, and more authentically in ads and other types of marketing communications.
As well as reaching the community by supporting queer media, we want these campaigns to be seen by all, using responsible media channels that are making strides to combat anti-LGBTQIA+ rhetoric and sentiment.
LGBTQIA+ representation in advertising is at a low. Channel 4’s Mirror on the Industry research indicates that between 2% and 3% of TV ads contain LGBTQIA+ representation, and only two thirds of those with queer people in a central role.
Secondly, in order for this work to thrive and multiply, we need an advertising and marketing industry that is inclusive and equitable for LGBTQIA+ people, an industry where queer people can thrive and succeed, which will in turn enable more queer-inclusive work.
Because in a challenging social and political climate for LGBTQIA+ people, we believe that frequent and authentic representation in advertising and marketing has the potential to create positive societal change, whilst also unlocking positive business effects for brands.
